Gai Jatra in Bhaktapur is one of the most lively and culturally rich festivals in Nepal. Celebrated in the month of Bhadra (August–September), it honors family members who have passed away during the past year. Traditionally, families participate in processions by leading a cow—or a child dressed as a cow—through the streets, symbolizing guidance for the departed souls to the afterlife.
What makes Bhaktapur’s celebration unique is its vibrant mix of satire, humor, and community participation. The city comes alive with colorful processions, traditional music, masked dances, and dramatic performances that often include social and political satire. Major areas like Bhaktapur Durbar Square become centers of activity, drawing large crowds of locals and visitors alike.
Beyond its festive atmosphere, Gai Jatra carries deep cultural significance. It provides a way for grieving families to find comfort while also promoting freedom of expression through humor and creativity. In Bhaktapur, the festival beautifully reflects the richness of Newari traditions and the strong sense of community among its people.
गाईजात्रा भक्मातपुर मनाइने सबैभन्दा जीवन्त र सांस्कृतिक रूपमा समृद्ध चाडहरूमध्ये एक हो। भाद्र महिनामा (अगस्ट–सेप्टेम्बर) मनाइने यो पर्व विगत एक वर्षमा दिवंगत भएका परिवारका सदस्यहरूको सम्झनामा मनाइन्छ। परम्पराअनुसार, परिवारहरूले गाई वा गाईको भेषमा सजिएका बालबालिकालाई अगाडि राखेर जुलुस निकाल्ने गर्छन्, जसले दिवंगत आत्मालाई परलोकतर्फ मार्गदर्शन गर्ने प्रतीक जनाउँछ।
भक्तपुरमा यस चाडको विशेषता भनेको यसको व्यंग्य, हास्य र सामुदायिक सहभागिताले भरिएको उत्सवमय वातावरण हो। शहरभरि रंगीन जुलुस, परम्परागत संगीत, मुखौटा नृत्य तथा सामाजिक र राजनीतिक व्यंग्य समेटिएका नाटकीय प्रस्तुतिहरूले माहोल झनै रमाइलो बनाउँछन्। विशेष गरी Bhaktapur Durbar Square जस्ता क्षेत्रहरू मुख्य आकर्षणको केन्द्र बन्ने गर्छन्, जहाँ स्थानीय तथा पर्यटकहरूको ठूलो भीड जम्मा हुन्छ।
यसको उत्सवमय पक्षभन्दा बाहिर, गाईजात्राको गहिरो सांस्कृतिक महत्त्व पनि छ। यसले शोकमा रहेका परिवारलाई सान्त्वना प्रदान गर्नुका साथै हास्य र सिर्जनशीलताको माध्यमबाट अभिव्यक्तिको स्वतन्त्रतालाई पनि प्रोत्साहन गर्छ। भक्तपुरमा यो पर्वले नेवारी परम्पराको समृद्धि र समुदायबीचको बलियो एकताको भावना झल्काउँछ।
